Teaching of professionalism to undergraduate students of Law in Mexico: The impact on the practice of the legal profession

Authors

Abstract

Professionalism is a key element of professional ethics. The paper approaches professionalism as a competence that students of Law in Mexico will require. The work is divided into three sections: the first explains what is meant by professionalism and its link with professional ethics; the second part deals with the teaching of professionalism; finally, it analyzes the results of a self-evaluation carried out by first-year law students at a university in western Mexico. The study shows that professionalism is an element of professional ethics that needs to be taught and therefore proposes to approach it as professional competence. On the other hand, it shows the results of the self-assessment in professionalism carried out by students. Self-evaluation appears as a first step in the development of professionalism as a professional competence.
